American Baccarat is one of the newer forms of Baccarat. This variation didn’t take hold until the 20th century. If you were to see a game of American Baccarat being played, you’d almost think you were watching a game of Baccarat En Banque or Chemin De Fer.

Like Baccarat En Banque and Chemin De Fer, American Baccarat is played at a large table with around 12 players sitting around the table. The players will even be passing around a 6-to-8 deck shoe. However, that’s where the similarities end.

How Is American Baccarat Different From Other Variations?

There is no person posting the bank like there is in Baccarat En Banque and Chemin De Fer. The betting limits are determined by the table maximum rather than the bet of a single player. In addition, gamblers don’t have to be either the Player or the Banker like they do in Baccarat En Banque or Chemin De Fer. In American Baccarat, gamblers may bet on either the Player or the Banker whenever they want.

In addition, no one is locked out of the action in American Baccarat. For example, if you were the third gambler in line when playing Chemin De Fer and the first gambler bet the full amount of the bank, you wouldn’t be allowed to bet. That’s not the case in American Baccarat because there is no “bank” to speak of. The casino covers all winning bets. Of course, Banker winnings are still subject to a 5% commission.

Another difference between American Baccarat and older Baccarat variations is that there are only two hands in American Baccarat: the Player hand and the Banker hand. Everyone who bets on Player is playing the Player hand and everyone who bets Banker is playing the Banker hand. This is a sharp contrast to Chemin De Fer where each Player gets their own hand as does the Banker. Even Baccarat En Banque gives gamblers the option of betting on two Player hands if they want.

Moreover, the drawing rules in American Baccarat are automatic. This is a necessary feature since multiple players are betting on one hand. If drawing was discretionary, heated arguments would certainly develop.

Here are the drawing rules in American Baccarat:

Players draw with a score of 5 or less and stand with a hand of 6 or more.

The Banker always hits with a score of 2 or less and if the Player stands, the Banker draws with a score of 5 or less.

If the Player draws a third card, the following rules apply:

• If the Banker has a score of 3, he draws if the Player’s third card is anything other than an 8.

• If the Banker has a score of 4, he draws if the Player’s third card is a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7.

• If the Banker has a score of 5, he draws if the Player’s third card is a 4, 5, 6, or 7.

• If the Banker has a score of 6, he draws if the Player’s third card is a 6 or a 7.

• The Banker always stands with a score of 7 regardless of the Player’s third card.
